In honor of what would have been Zakir Hussain’s 75th birthday, world renowned sitarist Nishat Khan presents a special tribute concert celebrating their lifelong collaboration and friendship, honoring Zakir’s extraordinary legacy and impact on the global music community.

Led by Alam Khan, the evening’s featured performance brings together a chamber ensemble of some of the Bay Area’s foremost exponents of Maestro Ali Akbar Khan’s legacy and the Maihar Gharana — his sons Alam and Manik Khan (Sarod) alongside disciple Arjun Verma (Sitar) — joined by Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri (Tabla), Khansahib’s trusted accompanist from 1981 until the end of his performance career.

 

The evening opens with the vibrant energy of the AACM Tabla Ensemble, composed and directed by Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri — one of the greatest Tabla masters in the world, whose knowledge and virtuosity have guided tabla students at the Ali Akbar College of Music for more than 44 years.

Recognized by Songlines as “one of the 20th Century’s greatest masters of the sarod” and widely considered one of the greatest living Indian Classical musicians, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan has not only preserved the sarod’s legacy but has also enhanced the instrument with new dimensions. For this performance, he will be accompanied by his two sons, Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash, who carry forward the family’s extraordinary musical legacy.

Experience an enchanting evening of Indian classical music featuring the soulful bansuri of Rakesh Chaurasia one of India’s leading flautists and nephew of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, accompanied by the dynamic and intricate tabla of Amit Kavthekar, disciple of Ustad Alla Rakha and Ustad Zakir Hussain. Together, they create a mesmerizing dialogue of melody and rhythm, blending tradition with masterful improvisation.
